Borei class submarine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 2007

The Borei class is a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN)
currently in development by Russia. It is intended to replace the Delta III
and Typhoon class in the Russian Navy.

Russian nuclear submarine at sea The first submarine of the Borei class, Yury Dol-
goruky was scheduled to be launched in 2002 but
the production of the vessel suffered severe delays
due to financial problems . The Yury Dolgoruky
was launched on April 15, 2007 in a great ceremo-
ny attended by many senior military and industrial
                                      personnel.

This new achievement is consid-
ered a milestone in the develop-
ment of the Russian navy. The
planned contingent of 12 stra-
tegic submarines is expected to
be commissioned within the next
decade. They will be armed with
the Bulava missile.

On 28 June 2007 Russia successfully tested
the new Bulava sea-based ballistic missile.
Capt. Igor Dygalo told The Associated Press
that the Bulava missile hit its target on the Pa-
cific peninsula of Kamchatka, about 6,700 kil-
ometers (4,200 miles) east of Moscow, after
being launched in northern Russia's White Sea
from a submarine. The Bulava is really a
