Russia Has "Integrated," Not Broken,
With Soviet Past
IntellectualCapital.com, February 12, 1998
Harvard scholar Richard Pipes writes in IntellectualCapital.com. "Thus we have, in-
dividuals, responsible for mass murder, torture and repression on an un-
precedented scale being allowed to lead peaceful lives and even to partici-
pate in the political and intellectual life.
Pipes continues, "As a result, ex-communist offi- Flag of the Russian Federation
cials of high rank occupy preeminent posi-
tions in government and education. The se-
curity organs of democratic Russia are staffed
by old functionaries of the KGB who bring
to their task the old habits. The same applies to
the diplomatic service. Thus, no real break with
the past has occurred: The old has been inte-
grated, as it were, into the new."
Nuclear Strike policy changed
Washington post, May 10, 1997
“President Boris Yeltsin has approved a new security doctrine for Russia that stipu-
lates the right to use nuclear weapons first” the Washington post reports, citing Rus-
sian security council deputy secretary Boris Berezovsky. We are not speaking of mak-
ing a first strike in order to secure advantage, but if we are driven into a corner
and are left with no other option, we will resort to nuclear weapons,” Bere-
zovsky says.

London Daily Telegraph June 27, 1997
"Russia is set to pass a law severely restricting the freedom of religious minorities and
foreign missionaries, which critics say is a throwback to the Communist era," reports
the London Daily Telegraph from Moscow. "
